NORDBLOC.1 two-stage helical bevel gear units used in distribution centre
In the distribution centre in Melbourne, a sorting facility handles up to 25,000 parcels per hour. Up to now, the parcel sorting system is the fastest on the fifth continent and is fully equipped with drive technology from NORD DRIVESYSTEMS.

The automated system with more than 1,000 conveyor technology modules has been designed and implemented by BCS: Receipt and scan of parcels, uninterrupted tracking through the plant, plant control, high-speed sorting and provision for loading on trucks. Hundreds of metres and several levels have to be passed. Often, a change of belt speed or a reversion of the movement direction is necessary. The powers vary from 0.37 kW to 5.5 kW.
NORD DRIVESYSTEMS has optimally adapted the required drive systems with geared motors and decentralised frequency inverters from its own production. Two-stage NORDBLOC.1 helical bevel gears were used, which NORD has developed with special attention to intralogistics applications. The gear units are especially compact and easy to use. Nevertheless, they offer a high load capacity and a long life. The wide range of speed ratios (i = 3.58 to 70) enables precise configuration for the respective requirements. As the gear units can be mounted on differently-sized shafts without modifying the shafts, the number of variants could be reduced to a manageable level.
The frequency inverters are also especially designed for conveyor technology applications. Preferably, they are directly mounted on a geared motor's terminal box to provide fully-integrated mechatronic drive units for use in the field. The NORDAC FLEX SK 200E series covers motor powers from 0.25 to 22 kW. Interfaces for all common field buses, e.g. Industrial Ethernet protocols, are available for networking and connection to the plant control system. In the Toll IPEC sorting plant they are used with horizontal belts as well as with inclined conveyors. They are also preferably used in lifting equipment.
